It’s Like Old Times for Moore, JetHawks

After a horrendous two months in double A, left-hander Trey Moore was sent back to the California League to find himself, to return to the form he had in dominating the league a year ago.

Welcome back to 1995.

Moore was brilliant for eight innings, giving up five hits and two runs, one earned, in the JetHawks’ 4-2 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze on Tuesday night before a paid crowd of 3,602 at the Hangar.

“I think I’m getting it back,” Moore said. “I still have a ways to go. I think I threw some pitches that I couldn’t get away with in double A.”

Modesty aside, Moore (2-1), who lowered his earned-run average to 1.61 in four starts with the JetHawks, could not have pitched much better.

After a leadoff walk in the fourth, Moore retired 15 of the last 17 batters he faced, with only a pair of infield singles by Kyle Towner spoiling the streak. And Towner was caught stealing to end Moore’s final inning.

“He looks like [he’s almost ready to go back to double A],” Manager Dave Brundage said. “This was probably his most consistent outing.

“There was just that one inning [the third] when he gave up back-to-back-to-back hits, but that was pretty much it for the game.”

While poor control and falling behind in the count was one of the primary reasons he had a 7.71 ERA with the double-A Port City Roosters in Wilmington, N.C., Moore had no such problems Tuesday.

He started 22 of the 29 batters he faced with strikes, walked one and struck out five.

Moore left the game after throwing 102 pitches. Clint Gould pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Jason Cook began the game for the JetHawks (3-4) by drilling his fourth home run over the left-field fence.

It was the first time this season a JetHawk has led off the first inning with a homer.

Bakersfield took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the third.

The JetHawks retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Carlos Villalobos walked with one out, and Doug Carroll and Sealy singled, driving in Villalobos.

James Clifford yanked a double down the right-field line, driving in Carroll with the go-ahead run.

In the ninth, Villalobos hit his first home run since April 16.
