Giltner Ends First Day in 5th Place

Liz Giltner of Chaminade High was in fifth place after the first day of the heptathlon in the USA Track & Field junior championships Friday at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Giltner, who won the high jump in the State championships earlier this month, totaled 2,962 points with marks of 14.95 seconds in the 100-meter high hurdles, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches in the high jump, 31-10 3/4 in the shotput and 26.42 in the 200.

Leader Ashley Bethel of Mission Viejo had 3,178 points.

Kadrina Coffee of Palmdale High, Zarinah Tillman and Ryan Jones of Cal State Northridge and Nicole Campbell of Ventura High did not advance to the finals of their respective events.

Coffee and Tillman clocked 55.50 and 55.74 in the 400, Jones ran 14.81 and 56.52 in the 110 high hurdles and the 400 intermediates and Campbell timed 2:21.56 in the 800.

Jeff Beam, the Western State Conference champion in the pole vault for Moorpark College, has committed to Cal State Northridge.

Boxing

The fight card scheduled for July 24 at the Warner Center Marriott will continue as planned, according to hotel spokesperson Brian Nadley.

Questions were raised about next month’s card when Gerrie Coetzee said he would no longer promote fights at the Marrriot.

Soccer

Entries are still available for the first Cal State Northridge six-a-side tournament to be held Sunday at Matador Field.

Eleven teams have signed up for the desired 16-team field. The entry fee of $120 per team includes a guaranteed three games. All proceeds will go toward scholarships for the Matador soccer team.

Teams are limited to 10 players and individuals are encouraged to show up to join a team. The deadline is 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Miscellany

Judith Davidson was appointed athletic director at Cal State Sacramento on Friday.

Among the five finalists for the position was Bob Hiegert, the athletic director at Cal State Northridge from 1965 to 1995.
