DWP Weathers Power Outage in California

Share

Los Angeles’ sweltering temperatures turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Department of Water and Power when a widespread power outage left parts of California and several other western states without electricity Tuesday.

“We had a lot of resources available because we were anticipating a lot of air-conditioners in the Valley,” DWP official Maureen Palmer said Wednesday.

DWP generating stations in Castaic, Long Beach, the Harbor and Playa del Rey were able to respond very quickly “and keep us on line,” Palmer said. “Other systems had to shed load--disconnect their customers. When the disturbance hit, we were able to . . . maintain better control of our system and not disconnect any of our customers.”

Southern California Edison lost 500 megawatts of power, knocking out electricity to 260,000 customers in Santa Monica, Culver City, Torrance, Redondo Beach and other South Bay cities.
