Mortensen Chosen Girls’ Athlete of the Year

Kim Mortensen, who set a national high school record of 9 minutes 48.59 seconds in the girls’ 3,200 meters for Thousand Oaks High in the Southern Section Masters Meet in May, has been selected as the Southern California girls’ athlete of the year by the Amateur Athletic Foundation.

The UCLA-bound Mortensen, who has also posted the fastest times in the nation this year in the 1,600 (4:44.9) and 3,000 (9:14.5), is the fifth girl from the region to be honored since the award was begun in 1976.

The others are sprinter Sherri Howard of Kennedy in 1980, ice-skater Tiffany Chin of Providence in 1984, sprinter-long jumper Marion Jones of Rio Mesa in 1991 and of Thousand Oaks in 1992 and ‘93, and softball pitcher Sara Griffin of Simi Valley in 1994.

Tom Farnbach, who placed sixth in the 100 and 200 meters in the State junior college track championships for Moorpark in May, has committed to Cal State Los Angeles.

Baseball

Matt Pitstick of Royal High, an All-Ventura County selection by The Times, has committed to Cal State Northridge.

Pitstick previously chose to attend UC Santa Barbara as a walk-on, but changed his mind when Northridge offered a scholarship.

Pitstick batted .460 and had a county-high 43 RBIs for the Highlanders. He also was 6-1 with a 1.66 ERA as a pitcher.

Golf

Alex Kuyumjian of Thousand Oaks shot a final-round 71 Thursday during the Las Vegas Legacy junior championships to finish with a three-round total of 220, placing 14th in the 72-player field.

Jason Semelsberger of Newhall finished tied for 22nd at 223 and Todd Golditch of Northridge was 26th with a total of 224.

Football

Scott Swartz, a quarterback from De Anza College, has signed to play at Cal State Northridge. Swartz will have two seasons of eligibility.

Basketball

Mike O’Quinn, a two-year starter at Loyola Marymount, will transfer to Cal State Northridge, his father, Mike, said Friday.

O’Quinn, 6 feet 5, will have one year of eligibility.
