Panorama City Has a Clear View From the Top, 13-3

In a battle for first place in the American Legion’s Central Valley Division, the second inning was all Panorama City needed.

Panorama City scored six runs on four hits in the second to spark a 13-3 victory over Valley North (17-5) on Saturday at Alemany High.

“Our team responded well to the pressure of a big game,” Panorama City Coach Scott Smith said. “We came out hitting the ball really well and playing sound defense.”

Seth Barkley led off the second with his sixth home run, and a bases-loaded triple by Sergio Franco gave Panorama City (19-4) a 6-1 lead.

Ed Jung led off a four-run third with a home run and Sigi Arroyo added a two-run single.

Panorama City’s starting pitcher, John Ennis, was ejected for taunting the umpire. Ennis pitched three innings, giving up one hit, one earned run and striking out four.

Panorama City didn’t miss a beat without Ennis. Phil Allsup pitched the final three innings, scattering two hits without giving up a run.

Valley North fell to third place in the division, one-half game behind Central Valley (18-5), which downed Las Virgenes East, 6-2.

“They came out today to play and we didn’t,” Valley North Coach Steve Thompson said. “They beat us in every respect; they outpitched us and outhit us.”

Jung went two for three with two runs batted in and scored two runs. John Wilson added two doubles and scored twice for Panorama City.

Valley North’s Micah Berger was two for three.

Antelope Valley South 4, Antelope Valley North 3--Dan O’Gara doubled home Sean Douglass and Kevin Barlow to break a 2-2 tie with two out in the seventh inning for Antelope Valley South (15-8) at Rosamond High.

Kris Campbell (2-5) pitched a five-hitter for Antelope Valley North (7-14) and hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.

Woodland Hills West 12, North Hollywood East 1--Steve Nelson hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Aaron Sabo added a grand slam in the seventh for Woodland Hills West (15-5) at Franklin Field.

Mike Conn (3-1) struck out five and allowed four hits in five innings.

Las Virgenes East 14, Sun Valley 7--Brian Fatur and Adam Davey each had four hits for Las Virgenes East (16-5) at Calabasas High.

Fatur finished with two RBIs and four runs, and Davey had three runs batted in.

Santa Clarita South 21, Tri-Cities 1--Eric Horvat went six for six with three doubles and drove in six runs for Santa Clarita South at Highland High.

Mike Granger and Matt McAfee each added three hits for Santa Clarita South, which scored 11 runs and sent 17 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh inning.

Central Valley 6, Las Virgenes 2--Nick Pikor had four hits and Jesus Carranza pitched a six-hitter for Central Valley at Calabasas High.

Brian Fatur had two hits, including a triple for Las Virgenes East.

Sunland-Tujunga 11, San Fernando 4--Jason Robitaille (5-1) scattered eight hits and had a double in three at-bats at Sunland-Tujunga Senior Field.

Michael Gallegos was two for three with three RBIs for Sunland-Tujunga (11-8).

Santa Clarita North 7, Quartz Hill 6--Brent Pellico had two doubles and scored three runs for Santa Clarita North at Saugus High. Bucky Downs had three stolen bases for Santa Clarita North. Kyle Jolly (4-3) allowed three hits in four innings and struck out three.

Encino 12, Studio City 1--Andy Campanella was three for three and drove in three runs for Encino (13-7) at Sylmar High. Tomy Salazar had three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Nick Rita also had two hits for Encino.

Jason Miller (3-1) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Studio City (8-13) committed seven errors, leading to six unearned runs.

Encino 10, North Hollywood West 0--Brian Felten (3-1) pitched a six-hitter with four strikeouts and also had three hits for Encino (14-7) at Valley College.

Tomy Salazar was three for three and Ryan Warren had a pair of doubles in three at-bats for Encino. Andy Campanella also had two hits.

Van Nuys East 2, San Fernando 1--George Piedra singled home Adam Boyd with one out in the top of the seventh with the winning run for Van Nuys East at Notre Dame.

Sean Smith pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Van Nuys East 7, Sepulveda 5--Kevin Stromsborg’s RBI single in the fifth inning capped a five-run rally for Van Nuys East (14-6) which came from behind to win at Notre Dame.
