Share

Helped by diminishing winds and cool, cloudy morning weather, firefighters Sunday encircled a brush fire in the hills north of Ventura and had the flames completely under control by 6 p.m.

The blaze, which police said was started accidentally Saturday afternoon by two teenagers playing with fireworks, charred about 400 acres by Sunday afternoon.

Although the fire burned near homes on Westridge Drive and Los Padres Court, no buildings were damaged and no one was injured, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

About 200 firefighters from the County Fire Department and the California Department of Forestry had the blaze encircled by 1 p.m. Sunday. Some fire crews would remain on the scene overnight, protecting against flare-ups.

The two teenagers, whose names were being withheld by Ventura police, were cited for unlawfully causing a fire on forest lands and released into the custody of their parents.
