Manuel and Maria Xavier aren’t regular lottery players. But when the SuperLotto jackpot reached $49 million last weekend, the San Francisco couple decided to buy a ticket. And Wednesday, lottery officials announced that the Xaviers are California’s newest multimillionaires. Their QuickPick ticket held the only winning combination for Saturday night’s drawing. The Xaviers discovered they had won when they checked the numbers in the Sunday newspaper. They immediately called their son, Paul. “We just didn’t know what to do,” Manuel Xavier said in a statement. “We haven’t been sleeping very well, either.” The retired couple will receive $1,764,000 after taxes for the next 20 years. They said their only immediate plan for the winnings was to buy high quality tennis shoes.
