Rancho Santiago Hires Single to Coach

Jack Single, who resigned Wednesday as women’s basketball coach at Saddleback College, has taken a similar position at Rancho Santiago.

Single led the Gauchos to a 31-1 record, the Orange Empire Conference championship and the state title game last season.

Rancho Santiago has won only one Orange Empire game since 1994.

Clark Wilkerson, Single’s assistant at Saddleback, is expected to join Single at Rancho Santiago.

Patrick Cadwallader of Anaheim won the 132-pound division at the USA Cadet Greco-Roman National Championships in Fargo, N.D., Thursday.

Cadwallader, who will be a junior at Brethren Christian in the fall, defeated Joe Privitere of New York in the championship match, 6-5. The cadet division, which had 105 participants in the 132-pound class, features wrestlers ages 15 and 16.

Cadwallader will compete in the freestyle competition, which concludes today.

Mater Dei has filled three coaching positions.

Ron Cheser was chosen to coach the girls’ volleyball team. He is a veteran club administrator and coach, most recently for the Yorba Linda-based Impact Volleyball Club. He replaces Pete West.

Brian Malavar replaces Dewayne DeNolf as wrestling coach and Guy Souza takes over for Dave Mikesell as boys’ and girls’ water polo coach.

Kim Bentley, who batted .362 for the softball team at El Modena, will attend Illinois State, Vanguard Athletic Director Fred Gale said. . . . Allison Lubke, a starter on El Modena’s Southern Section champion girls’ soccer team, will attend San Francisco State.
