Fire Consumes 1,500 Acres, Still Rages
A brush fire sparked by lightning earlier this week remained out of control Friday night with 1,500 acres burned and no sign of containment, a spokeswoman for the United States Forest Service said.
So far there have been no injuries and no structures were threatened, said Shawn Lawler, a spokeswoman for the forest service.
The fire began about 1 p.m. Thursday in the Sespe Wilderness near Lake Piru and about five miles north of the refuge for the endangered California condors, Lawler said.
By Friday night, the fire had traveled north in the direction of Pyramid Lake, continuing to burn across the Ventura and Los Angeles county line, she said.
On Friday, authorities added 12 water-dropping helicopters and 12 air tankers to the more than 600 firefighters from the forest service, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the California Department of Forestry, Lawler said.
Steep and dry vegetation continued to hinder the firefighters’ effort to quell the flames, she said.
