A pit bull attacked an 8-year-old Oxnard boy, sending him to the hospital with numerous puncture wounds Tuesday afternoon.

Salvador Ayala was treated for deep cuts and puncture wounds to his face, arms and legs at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and released, hospital officials said.

The pit bull was placed in quarantine at a county shelter, said Kathy Jenks of county animal control.

Neighbors said the boy, who lives on the 100 block of South C Street, was visiting a friend on the 100 block of South E Street who owns the dog. Neighbors, who were unsure why the dog attacked Salvador, called 911 at about 2:30 p.m.

“He was chewed up pretty bad,” said Lynn Borman, a paramedic with Gold Coast Ambulance in Oxnard. She said the boy’s left calf was particularly torn up.

“But he was such a stoic young man,” she said. “He never cried. He was just the bravest little guy.”
