Feng of U.S. Bouncing Along

American Amy Feng scored her second consecutive straight-sets singles victory in the round-robin segment of table tennis, but teammate Lily Yip suffered her first defeat.

Feng, 27, of Wheaton, Md., defeated Berta Rodriguez Olate of Chile, 21-15, 21-7.

Feng, seeded 30th, next faces fourth-seeded Liu Wei of China, with the winner advancing to the final 16. Each has a 2-0 record.

Yip, 32, of Metuchen, N.J., who is 1-1 and seeded 46th, lost to 15th-seeded Chan Tan Lui of Hong Kong, 21-5, 21-17.

Yip and Feng, who teamed for a doubles victory Tuesday, were born in China, where Yip was ranked in the top 20 in the early 1980s.

Feng is ranked 44th in the world and Yip is ranked 95th.

The two Americans entered in the men’s singles competition--Jim Butler of Augusta, Ga., and David Zhuang of East Brunswick, N.J.--lost their opening round-robin singles matches.

Butler fell to Russia’s Dimitri Mazunov, 23-21; Zhuang lost to Canada’s Johnny Huang, 21-11, 21-11. Butler and Zhuang will play again today.
