Garrett, Cowboys Hold Off Raiders for 35-34 Victory

Jason Garrett passed for threw two touchdowns in the last 1:35, including a 59-yarder to Billy Davis with 40 seconds left Saturday night as the Dallas Cowboys rallied for a wild 35-34 exhibition victory over the Oakland Raiders at Irving, Texas.

Davis cut across the field to catch Garrett’s pass, then eluded two members of the Oakland secondary for the touchdown.

Chris Boniol kicked the vital extra point after Garrett’s game-tying pass to give Dallas only its fifth exhibition victory over the Raiders against 11 losses.

Rookie Alfred Montez of Western New Mexico connected with Kenny Shed on a 40-yard touchdown pass play with 54 seconds left as the Raiders answered Garrett’s first touchdown pass. It came when Garrett connected with rookie Jason Shelley on a 60-yard touchdown pass play with 1:35 to play.

David Klingler threw two touchdown passes to put the Raiders ahead until third-string quarterback Garrett provided the last-minute dramatics.

Tailback Leonard Russell ran for a first-quarter touchdown and quarterback Craig Whelman threw for a third-quarter touchdown as the San Diego Chargers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 20-10, in an exhibition game at Tokyo.

The Steelers’ lone touchdown came on a five-yard pass play from Kordell Stewart to John Parquar.

Kerwin Bell completed all three of his passes--including a two-yard touchdown pass to Scott Slutzker with 4:54 remaining--as the Indianapolis Colts defeated the New Orleans Saints, 10-3, in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibition game.

Defense dominated after the teams swapped second-quarter field goals, a 22-yarder by the Colts’ Cary Blanchard and a 31-yarder by Doug Brien of the Saints.

Bell, a 31-year-old former Florida quarterback, has been waived or released seven times since he was taken in the seventh round of the 1988 draft by Miami. He has never thrown a regular-season NFL pass.
