The University of Mississippi in Oxford is host for “Elvis and the Sacred South,” a week of both scholarly and pop-culture looks at the Presley myth. Running today through Friday, the Second International Conference on Elvis Presley features rockabilly and gospel performances, road trips, an art exhibit and a documentary film. Experts from five countries will speak on how the King’s music relates to Southern culture, and there will even be a performance of Elvis numbers sung in Latin.
Presley’s Graceland home in Memphis kicks off its own annual celebration on Saturday. Elvis Week 96 is actually nine days of activities in Memphis and the singer’s birthplace, Tupelo, Miss. Included are performances, a classic car rally, a riverboat cruise, a 5K run and, the night of Aug. 15, a candlelight vigil at Graceland.
“Elvis and the Sacred South” admission: $70 per day. Information: (601) 232-7282. Elvis Week 96 information: (800) 238-2000.
