Meola, MetroStars Blank Rapids, 2-0

Roberto Donadoni scored one goal and assisted on another as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars defeated the Colorado Rapids, 2-0, Sunday at Denver.

Tony Meola posted his league-leading seventh shutout for New York-New Jersey (11-11), which improved to 7-2 with Donadoni in the lineup.

In front of 8,880 at Mile High Stadium, Donadoni opened the scoring 14 minutes into the game with a 28-yard free kick. He shot the ball over the Rapids’ defensive wall and into the upper left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

Twenty minutes later, Donadoni lobbed a pass from midfield to Miles Joseph, who shot over Colorado goalkeeper Chris Woods from 18 yards out for his first goal.

San Jose 6, New England 1--Missael Espinoza’s goal in the 48th minute snapped a tie as the Clash erupted for five goals in the second half and blasted the Revolution at San Jose.

Jorge Rodas started the play for San Jose (11-11), by heading the ball to Espinoza, who was 15 yards out on the left side. Espinoza then took a 15-yard shot from the left side that beat goalkeeper Jim St. Andre to the left post.
