John Wetteland, leading the majors with 38 saves, was put on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Yankees because of a strained right groin. Wetteland is 38 for 41 in save chances. . . . The Yankees’ David Cone, in his most extensive test since being sidelined by an aneurysm in his right shoulder in May, felt strong after pitching three innings of a simulated game. The Yankees are hoping the 1994 Cy Young winner can rejoin their rotation on Sept. 6.

Chris Sabo, 34, who has the fewest at-bats of any Cincinnati Reds infielder, has agreed to go to the minor leagues to open a roster spot and get some playing time. . . . Gary Sheffield wasn’t happy to learn that the Florida Marlins might try to trade him in the off-season. “If they are going to go with youth, I don’t know if it’s right for me to be here,” said Sheffield, 27, who will be in the last year of a four-year, $22-million contract next season. “But if they are trying to win, this is the perfect place to win.”

Florida financier Norton Herrick is interested in acquiring the Houston Astros if Drayton McLane decides to sell the team, USA Today reported Friday. “We have the money, we have the site, we have the stadium design,” Herrick said. “We have everything but the baseball team.”
