Fien’s 542 Yards Not Enough

Cory Wedel tied a school record with six field goals Saturday night and Josh Wallwork passed for three touchdowns as Wyoming rallied for a 40-38 victory over Idaho at Laramie, Wyo.

Ryan Fien, a transfer from UCLA, was 36 for 58 for 542 yards and four touchdowns for Idaho, making its Division I-A debut.

MIDWEST

No. 21 Kansas State 21, Texas Tech 14--Brian Kavanagh passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the Wildcats survived a wild finish in the inaugural Big 12 Conference game at Manhattan, Kan.

Texas Tech’s Byron Hanspard, who rushed for 1,374 yards last year, had 115 yards in 21 carries, his seventh consecutive 100-yard game.

Oklahoma State 23, Southwest Missouri 20 (OT)--David Thompson, frustrated all night behind an inconsistent offensive line, broke free for a 13-yard touchdown run to give Oklahoma State a victory at Stillwater, Okla., in the first Division I-A regular-season overtime game.

The overtime rule was put into effect this season in the major-college ranks after being used more than a decade in the lower divisions, and it saved the Cowboys, who needed a touchdown in the final minute to force the extra time.

ROCKIES

No. 19 Brigham Young 58, Arkansas St. 9--Steve Sarkisian threw four touchdown passes as the Cougars improved to 2-0 at Provo, Utah.

Air Force 45, San Jose St. 0--Andre Johnson, a senior who entered the season with only 18 career yards, ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns, including a 71-yard scoring run 43 seconds into the game at Air Force Academy, Colo.

Colorado St. 61, Tenn-Chattanooga 19--Moses Moreno threw an 80-yard pass to Jeremy Calhoun on Colorado State’s first play from scrimmage and Calvin Branch ran 70 yards for a touchdown on the second to lead the Rams in a WAC at Fort Collins, Colo.

Boston College 24, Hawaii 21--John Matich kicked a 42-yard field goal with no time left to give the Eagles the victory at Honolulu.

West Virginia 34, Pittsburgh 0--Amos Zereoue scored on a 69-yard run on his first college carry to lead West Virginia at Pittsburgh.

Maryland 30, Northern Illinois 6--Delbert Cowsette’s 49-yard fumble return for a touchdown helped the Terrapins rally from a surprising halftime deficit at College Park, Md.

SOUTHWEST

Southern Methodist 17, Tulsa 10--Ramon Flanigan ran for a touchdown and passed for another as Southern Methodist snapped a 10-game losing streak at Dallas in the Western Athletic Conference debut for both teams.

Houston 43, Sam Houston St. 25--Chuck Clements threw three touchdown passes to rally the Cougars at Houston.
