Sloppy Highland Wins Opener, 12-0

Highland High was staggered by its own mistakes--five turnovers and 19 penalties--but defense helped deliver a 12-0 season-opening victory over Silverado High on Friday night.

The Bulldogs scored on a seven-yard pass from Camy Smith to Brian Floyd in the second quarter and a 37-yard run by Will Demps in the third quarter, providing relief for a defense that recorded six sacks and two interceptions, and halted two Skyhawk threats with big plays.

A sack by Tony Martinez, who had three in the game, put Silverado out of field-goal range after it marched to the 10-yard line.

An interception by Marcus Prevost halted another drive after Silverado reached the Highland 17.

Highland committed six fumbles, turning it over five times--once at the Silverado goal line.

Smith completed 22 of 31 passes for 199 yards and sophomore Brandon McElvaine rushed for 100 yards in seven carries and fullback Prevost added 68 in nine carries.

Las Vegas Valley 23, Littlerock 8--Devon Reese rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown as the Lobos lost at Las Vegas.

Reese’s three-yard touchdown run and Michael Woods’ two-point conversion run cut Littlerock’s deficit to 14-8 with 10 minutes 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

LaRontae Johnson, who had 148 yards in 16 carries, scored on runs of 38 and 35 yards for Valley (2-0).
