OUTLOOK

For the first time in many years, Friedrich has a smile on his face. Well, at least some optimism, after six years of struggling to get the Sentinels back to their winning form of the 1960s and 1970s. “For once, we are a contender. Anyone who overlooks or takes Magnolia lightly will get beat,” Friedrich said. “We have a lot of big, strong, experienced linemen.” The Sentinels lack strong players at some of the skill positions, however. How well Freund does in the quarterback spot will be a key. And replacing first-team all-league linebacker Carlos Martin and defensive back Ryan Heiman will be tough. But Friedrich has high hopes for Navarro at defensive back and as a kick-return specialist. Chhen and Wilson have started since they were sophomores and Kneubuhl was a second-team All-Orange League pick in 1995. Lindstedt started two seasons ago as a sophomore, but missed 1995 with a knee injury. Uai is expected to be the team’s main rusher.
