El Toro had the league’s defensive player of the year, linebacker Damian de Beaubien, and the league’s best playoff run, winning the Division V championship with a 27-17 victory over Servite.

The Chargers’ only setback in league was a 28-14 loss to Irvine, which gave Irvine a chance to steal the league title with a Week 10 victory over Corona del Mar. Irvine, which couldn’t do it, lost, 29-22, and went to the playoffs as the at-large (fourth-place) team.

Corona del Mar nearly made it an All-Sea View League final, but was beaten by Servite in the semifinals, 21-16, as it failed to score from the one-yard line when quarterback Josh Walz, the offensive player of the year, fumbled with 1 minute 53 seconds remaining. Walz was in the end zone on a quarterback sneak, but the ball was in nose guard David Graham’s hands. The Sea Kings were trying to reach the title game for the first time since 1988.

Newport Harbor, division champion with a perfect 14-0 record in 1994, uncharacteristically failed to qualify for a playoff berth.

Woodbridge was shut out five of its first six games, and when it had a chance to upset Irvine in Week 8, it lost, 7-6, the victim of Jake Savona’s 62-yard scoring run on the game’s second play.
