1995 in Review

For all of you who enjoyed that wacky flick called the South Coast League Season last year, the sequel should prove just as interesting.

Mater Dei was the defending Division I champion after finishing undefeated in 1994, but then lost a late regular-season game to San Clemente, 23-17.

The loss snapped the top-ranked Monarchs’ 21-game winning streak and might have been the most important victory for the Tritons in 15 years.

For the Monarchs, it meant they would not win the 1995 South Coast League title outright for the first time since joining the league in 1992. San Clemente lost to Capistrano Valley and Capistrano Valley lost to Mater Dei and all three finished 4-1 and shared the league title.

Mater Dei won the league’s No. 1 playoff berth by virtue of a coin toss and advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Los Alamitos, 23-14, at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.

For Los Alamitos, the victory was payback for 1994, when the Monarchs beat the Griffins in the semifinals.

Capistrano Valley advanced to the second round before losing to Long Beach Poly. With 1 minute 25 seconds remaining, a Cougar fumble at the one-yard line gave the Jackrabbits the ball and they scored the winning touchdown on the ensuing play.

San Clemente lost in the first round to La Puente Bishop Amat, 31-21.
