OUTLOOK

With only five starters back, it will be a rebuilding year for Calvary Chapel. The Eagles’ strongest points are their offensive line, anchored by Schultz, Berry, Grey and Callas, and their defense with Schultz, Grey, Chin and linebackers Callas, Hanley and Dutton. The secondary also should be strong with the return of Murrieta and Andino. It will be a return to Orange County for Lapes, a former football coach at Inglewood High who also has coached football and baseball at Mater Dei and Capistrano Valley. Lapes, who left Capistrano Valley in 1990, owns a sporting goods store in Laguna Hills. After his oldest son, Chad, began managing the store, Lapes decided last spring he was ready to return to coaching. He took over for Joe Walters, who coached for year and remains athletic director. “It’s a rebuilding year. I’m a new coach and I don’t know half the things that are going on right now. I’m just trying to get it figured out,” Lapes said.
