Restaurant Blaze Causes $75,000 Damage
An early-morning fire at El Comal Restaurant caused an estimated $75,000 in damage but no injuries, fire officials said Wednesday.
Firefighters were summoned to the 900 block of 17th Street at about 4 a.m. to battle flames shooting from the back of the restaurant, said Amanda Laser, a Santa Ana dispatcher.
The fire left the front of the store standing, but the rear sustained a lot of damage, Laser said.
More than 30 firefighters worked about 25 minutes to control the blaze, which is under investigation, the dispatcher said.
Firefighter Al Dasher said, “We’re trying to pinpoint where it happened. We know that it happened in the back . . . storage or cooking area, but we don’t know exactly where.”
No one was inside the restaurant when the blaze was discovered.
