Fullerton’s Garner Named to All-Area Team

Mike Garner, The Times Orange County prep baseball player of the year last spring, is among six county players named Tuesday to the South all-state team by the California Baseball Coaches Assn.

Garner, who was 10-2 last season with an 0.50 earned-run average at Fullerton High, has enrolled at Cal State Fullerton. He is joined on the team by Bobby Brito, who hit .531 with 10 home runs for Cypress last year, and Kevin Burford, who has enrolled at Rancho Santiago after hitting .397 with 10 homers for Fountain Valley last year.

Other members include Mike Hessman, who signed with the Atlanta Braves after going 9-0 on the mound for Mater Dei last spring with a .417 average and 10 home runs; Ryan Owens, who is also at Cal State Fullerton after batting .500 with 10 home runs for Sonora in the spring; and Steve Schenewerk, who will play for Pepperdine after compiling a 15-2 record with a 1.44 ERA for Fountain Valley last season.

Players were selected from the Southern, San Diego and Los Angeles City sections, representing more than 500 high school teams.
