IS IT THE SHOES?

Mission Viejo Coach Bill Denny can be fairly strict about his team’s uniforms. For example, players are not allowed to wear headbands or bandannas. So where have his players begun to express themselves? Their shoes.

The Diablos are coloring the tape they wear over their shoes with the school’s colors--red and yellow. Quarterback Jake Fitch goes for an all-red look. Wide receiver Jahmal Gillespie likes all yellow, while backup quarterback Tom Baribeau opts for stripes.

“I tell them no headbands or anything so it’s the one area where they have a little leeway,” Denny said. “After last week’s win [over Santa Ana], we were saying it must be the shoes.”

CHOCK UP ANOTHER MATER DEI VICTORY

It was tough enough for the Long Beach Jordan crowd to watch their Panthers get thrashed by Mater Dei, 37-0, but they also had to watch a Monarch fan win the 50-50 drawing, which was worth $150 to the winner.

“Hey why don’t you give that to the [Jordan] athletic fund?” asked the PA announcer as the winning ticket was handed in. “You know you all don’t need the money.”

A TWIN THING

Canyon’s twin brother combination of quarterback Craig and receiver Chad Scott clicked again in Canyon’s 10-7 victory over Brea Olinda Friday. Chad caught eight of Craig’s 13 completions for 85 yards and the pair connected on the game-winning touchdown play--a six-yard pass--midway through the fourth quarter.

Brea had its brother combination of Matt and Dan Kalcevich. Matt, the Wildcats starting quarterback, tossed a lateral to Dan for a double-pass play, but the attempted bomb fell incomplete.

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR

Foothill Coach Tom Meiss said, “Woodbridge is a much better team than people think they are” despite the Warriors’ 14-game winless streak.

Woodbridge had a chance to beat Foothill on its final drive Thursday and it lost the season opener by giving up two touchdowns in the final minute.

Coach Rick Gibson said his team has to grow into its role and mature, and that Billy Battle’s three fumbles against Foothill were typical of the Warriors’ plight: “It’s his first year of carrying the ball a whole lot. Last week, he gained 95 yards and didn’t fumble once.”

BLAST FROM PAST

The Tustin football program is selling miniature replica Tiller helmets for $20 at its souvenir table this season.

According to Tustin High senior Brian Cameron, the school’s athletics commissioner, the most popular helmet on display is one with a logo with a T that appears to be flying through the air like a football being passed.

The logo is from seasons past, when the team passed more often. Tustin, however, under second-year Coach Myron Miller, is predominately a running team.
