Four protesters, including a 15-year-old youth. were arrested Saturday near the Pacific Lumber Co. Owl Creek site--bringing the arrest toll to more than 1,000, said Humboldt County Sheriff’s Sgt. Pete Cirabellini.

He said many protesters have climbed trees and are out of reach of deputies. Those being arrested have been trying to bring in food and other supplies to the tree perchers, Cirabellini said.

“We can’t safely take the people out of the trees, but we can go up there and cut the lines that they hang their sleeping bags from,” he said.

The protesters are trying to stop the logging of dead and dying timber in the 3,000-acre Headwaters Forest--the last privately owned grove of its kind in the country. Thousands of protesters have converged on a quarter-mile stretch of road in front of Pacific Lumber’s Carlotta mill, about 280 miles north of San Francisco.

Meanwhile, a Grass Valley company wants to log 80 acres of redwoods and native hardwoods on the Big Sur coast--much to the dismay of coastal residents.

The Menasha Corp. is asking the California Department of Forestry for permission to harvest saw logs and firewood from the site about 45 miles south of Carmel.
