Buena Wins Cross-Country Opener

James Hipskind of Buena High placed first and teammates Jason Clabaugh and Richard Valle finished eighth and 10th to lead the Bulldogs to victory Wednesday in the first Channel League cross-country meet of the season.

Hipskind timed 15 minutes 50 seconds over the three-mile course that wound through the Dos Pueblos High campus and the surrounding orchards. Clabaugh ran 16:42 and Valle 16:48.

Defending league champion Buena totaled 55 points to turn back preseason favorite Rio Mesa (59) and third-place Dos Pueblos (76).

Ronald Almaguer and Scott Johnsen placed third (15:57) and fifth (16:11) for Rio Mesa.

Sophomore Robin Scott of San Marcos won the girls’ race in 18:57 to lead the Royals to a 51-point total and a narrow victory over 13-time defending league champion Buena (54) and Ventura (57).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Harvard-Westlake d. Marina, 15-4, 15-6, 15-8--Christine Bohle had seven kills for the Wolverines (3-0) in a nonleague match between two of the state’s top teams.

Harvard-Westlake is ranked No. 1 in Division III and Marina is No. 8 in Division I. Allison Rintala had 25 assists.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Campbell Hall 12, Culver City 6--Faith Scher and Maya Shammas swept three doubles matches to help the Vikings (3-1) in a nonleague match.

MEN’S SOCCER

CS Dominguez Hills 4, Cal Lutheran 3--Kenyon Lohn scored the tying goal with 20 seconds left in regulation and Juan Carlos Rocha scored the deciding goal in overtime.

Mike McElroy scored two goals and Brian Collins had one for the Kingsmen (3-3), who trailed 2-0.

Cal State Bakersfield 5, The Master’s 1--Eric Benitez scored for the Mustangs (5-3-1).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 6, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 0--Kim Holeman had two goals for the Regals (6-1, 3-0) in the SCIAC game.
