A fight that broke out Thursday night near Valencia High School left a 20-year-old man dead and a 15-year-old critically wounded, police said.

While a football game was underway at the school about 7 p.m., the teenager was attacked as he stood at a strip mall in the 100 block of North Bradford Avenue.

Several men drove up in a car and stabbed him, witnesses said. As the fight moved to the street, several people, apparently the victim’s friends, came out of a nearby convenience store and saw that he was in trouble. Several rounds were fired, and an attacker was fatally wounded.

Night students from Valencia High and shoppers said they heard at least four shots.

Anslmo Velazquez, 24, said he was sitting in an English class a few hundreds yards away when he heard the shots and ran out to see what had happened.

“At first, I thought it had come from the school” he said. “It was kind of loud.”

The first attacker apparently was shot at least once in the head and died at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

The stabbing victim trudged to a nearby pizza parlor and got help, witnesses said. He was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with critical injuries, police said.

Police had not released the victims’ names late Thursday.
