Last-Second Touchdown Saves Newbury Park

Garrett Hobba scored on a one-yard run with 15 seconds to play to lift Newbury Park High to a 37-34 victory over Buena in a nonleague game Friday night at Ventura High.

Hobba gained only 16 yards rushing, but scored twice in six carries. His final score capped a 72-yard drive by the Panthers (3-0), who were left trailing, 34-29, after Buena’s Brady Phelps broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown run with 1:35 to play.

Phelps’ run, the last of his four touchdowns, came after Newbury Park had taken a 29-27 edge on Shad Agel’s 25-yard field goal with 2:31 remaining.

Phelps, who finished with 207 yards in 21 carries, gave Buena (1-2) its first lead of the game on a one-yard run with 4:17 left in the third quarter.

On the winning drive, Newbury Park quarterback Chris Czernek completed five of seven passes for 67 yards. He finished 29 of 49 for 346 yards and three touchdowns with one interceptions.

Receiver Pat Reddick made 11 catches for 139 yards and Jake Farrel had eight receptions for 119 yards for Newbury Park.
