San Clemente’s No-Huddle Offense Too Much for Huntington Beach

San Clemente quarterback Chris Hayward threw two touchdown passes and ran in another to lead the 10th-ranked Tritons to an easy 38-13 victory over Huntington Beach Friday night.

San Clemente Coach Mark McElroy had hoped to wear down Huntington Beach with his no-huddle and quick passing attack and Hayward made it happen. The senior quarterback completed 14 of 21 passes in the first half for 215 yards and two touchdowns to give the Tritons a 31-7 halftime lead.

When Huntington Beach finally slowed down the San Clemente passing attack, Triton running back Ryan Davis took over. He rushed for 126 yards in 22 carries, with 98 yards coming in the second half.

“We knew they had a lot of two-way players and we were hoping to come out throwing and wear them down a little,” said San Clemente Coach Mark McElroy.

Huntington Beach Coach Mike Dodd was worried his team might not be as ready to play after traffic problems saw his team arrive at the field only 10 minutes before the scheduled kickoff.

And Dodd’s worries were realized when the Tritons scored on their first possession after Hayward ran one yard to cap a seven-play, 30-yard drive. After forcing Huntington Beach to punt, San Clemente’s Greg Lang returned the punt 87 yards for the score and the Tritons coasted to the victory.
