If You Build It Big, Hershiser Will Come

ORIOLES 10, INDIANS 4

Orel Hershiser, who worked for 11 seasons in pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium, knows a thing or two about atmosphere at throwback ballparks such as Camden Yards in Baltimore.

He doesn’t much care for it.

“They want to create the old-style ambience, but nobody ever says, ‘Let’s push the fences back,’ ” said Hershiser, who starts Game 2 for Cleveland today. “I don’t think anybody says, ‘Let’s have a huge ballpark. Let’s make it 400 feet down each line and 500 feet to center.’ Nobody ever says that.

“It’s a beautiful ballpark, but they left out some land out there. I wish when they laid out Baltimore, this block had been bigger.”

Baltimore reliever Arthur Rhodes barely made the Orioles’ 25-man postseason roster, then rewarded Manager Davey Johnson with a strong performance.

Rhodes came in with the Orioles protecting a 10-4 lead and runners on first and second with one out in the eighth inning. He struck out pinch-hitter Brian Giles, then got Omar Vizquel to hit into an inning-ending fielder’s choice.
