Montclair Prep Starts Busy Week With Win Over Outmanned Malibu

Freshman tailback Ronald Adams rushed for 65 yards and two touchdowns Wednesday as Montclair Prep waltzed past Malibu, 34-10, in a nonleague football game at Malibu High.

Adams carried five times and scored on runs of 32 and 24 yards, both in the second quarter.

The rout was the first of two games in three days for the Mounties (3-1), who play L.A. Jordan on Friday at Valley College.

Malibu (1-4) is a first-year program. Its other nine opponents are junior varsity or freshman teams.

But Rich Lawson, Shark coach and athletic director, agreed to play the game under varsity conditions. Without Lawson’s generosity, Montclair Prep would not have had the eight varsity games required by the Southern Section for a free-lance team to qualify for the playoffs.

By prior agreement, Montclair Prep Coach George Giannini held eight upperclassmen, including senior quarterback Robert Neumann, from the game.

Montclair Prep led, 26-0, and had outgained the Sharks, 242 yards to 21, by halftime. Malibu had no first-half first downs.

The Mounties’ other touchdowns came on a 68-yard run by Robert Bowens, a 42-yard run by James Emelio and a 72-yard fumble return by Brandon Coates.

Malibu scored in the fourth quarter on a 31-yard field goal by Sean Svensson and a seven-yard pass from Cory Escobar to Brendon O’Neal.
