Notre Dame 23, Crespi 35--J.P. Mauren-Laurens clocked 15 minutes 38 seconds for the visiting Celts (2-3 in league) in a Mission League loss at Griffith Park.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Louisville 20, Notre Dame 38--Junior Kelly Harrington ran the Griffith Park course in 18:25 for the Royals (3-1 in league) in a Mission League meet.

Birmingham 22, El Camino Real 33--Sophomore Tiffany Burgess placed first for Birmingham as the defending City Section champion Braves took five of the top seven places in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Pierce College. Burgess, runner-up in the 1995 City championships, clocked 19:42 over the three-mile course.

Defending City champion Jamie Newman of El Camino Real failed to finish in her first race since recovering from a knee injury.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sylmar d. North Hollywood, 15-6, 15-6, 15-8--Patty Mendoza had nine kills and 22 digs and Sandra Smiley had 18 assists for the Spartans (7-1, 4-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Van Nuys d. Monroe, 15-1, 15-2, 15-8--Angela Beckmier had 13 kills and three aces for the Wolves (8-1, 5-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Santa Barbara 10, Westlake 8--The Dons (8-1), ranked No. 2 in Division I, got a scare when the Warriors (8-2) took seven of nine singles sets in a nonleague match. But the Dons won eight of nine sets in doubles. Westlake’s Helena Horak swept at No. 1 singles.

WATER POLO

Ventura College 11, Chaffey 7--Zack Finley scored four goals and Nure Saad added three for the Pirates (14-7-1, 3-1) in a Western State Conference match.

Crescenta Valley 21, Hoover 6--Neil Reynolds had eight goals and Tony Kuleto added four for the Falcons (13-6, 3-0) in a Pacific League match at Hoover.
