A martial arts master will be breaking boards for the Irvine Police Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program this year.

Grand Master Chang Jin Kang, a ninth-degree black belt and two-time world record holder in board breaking, will be the highlight of the department’s November campaign to raise money for the anti-drug program.

This event “underscores the commitment we have all made to keep our youth drug free,” Irvine Police Chief Charles Brobeck said.

Kang said he will lead an exhibition of “the greatest martial arts masters,” including Ultimate Fighting Champion Royce Gracie and Karate Master Fumio Demura.

Kang said he hopes to help raise thousands of dollars for the department’s DARE program and also “raise the awareness of the benefits concerning the athletic and mental discipline of tae kwon do and martial arts in general.”

The event is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Hyatt Regency Irvine.

A reception with a dinner and a silent auction will follow the exhibition.
