Duck Shots

A weekly update on the Mighty Ducks.

The Ducks’ early road swing, without Paul Kariya, produces one victory, losses in Toronto and Phoenix, and a Father’s Day gift pack of ties. Wednesday’s home opener includes another blown lead and a loss, this time to the Flyers. Here’s a look at what’s ahead:

* Where they stand: 1-3-2 (4 points), sixth in Pacific Division, tied for ninth in Western Conference.

* Who’s hot: Teemu Selanne gives at the office early and often. He has five goals, six assists and four penalty minutes (cross checking and roughing) through six games. Old-time hockey.

* Who’s not: The choreographer for the opening night extravaganza just doesn’t get it. Flyer highlights from the 1970s beat a staged fight--trampolines, mascot and all--any day.

UPCOMING

Time for a little home cooking before the Ducks take a short trip to the East. After Oct. 24, the Ducks’ next road game is in mid-November.

* Friday, San Jose (7:30 p.m., no TV). Plenty of retreads to go around for the Sharks (1-3-2), who are trying to regain respectability with old Kings (Tony Granato, Kelly Hrudey, Bernie Nicholls).

* Sunday, Boston (5 p.m., Fox Sports West). Two days after the Bruins tie the Rangers to open the season, Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan declares team dead in the water. Dead team wins two of its next three games.

* Tuesday, at Philadelphia (4:30 p.m., Fox Sports West). Eric Lindros, who missed the game at the Pond, might be ready for this one. His team is struggling for direction without him.

* Thursday, at Hartford (4 p.m., Fox Sports West). Keith Primeau and Paul Coffey are in the fold and goalie Sean Burke has the Whalers off to a good start. But Whalers have been down this road before . . . before missing the playoffs.
