Buena Park Falls Against Troy’s Stands

Twice in the second half, Buena Park threatened to climb back into Friday’s Freeway League opener against Troy. And twice Troy’s defense put up goal-line stands as the Warriors held on for a 33-8 victory at Buena Park High.

“Our guys came through and didn’t give up when they threatened,” Troy Coach John Turek said.

Behind, 19-8, Buena Park (1-5, 0-1 in league) was able to put together a third-quarter drive that gave them first and goal at Troy’s seven-yard line. On third down, Buena Park running back Brian McDonald was hit hard and fumbled, with the Warriors recovering at their three.

Troy (3-3, 1-0) failed to move the ball and was forced to punt from its own end zone. Buena Park took possession at its 44 and again mounted a drive that put the Coyotes inside Troy’s 10.

McDonald gained six yards in three carries, but was kept out of the end zone. On fourth down at the two, quarterback Ruben Gasso’s pass was deflected at the goal line.

Troy then put the game in the hands of running back Kyion Gryes, who finished with 178 yards on the night. He carried the ball 10 times for 68 yards during a 13-play drive that ended with his one-yard touchdown run that made the score 26-8 with 4:40 left in the game.
