An 8-month-old baby died and his mother was seriously injured Tuesday after a pickup truck that apparently was running a red light broadsided their car, police said.

Kandy Wendt, 33, of Santa Ana and her son, Samuel, who was buckled into a baby car seat, were traveling south on Culver Drive about 11:45 a.m. when a pickup truck struck their car near Barranca Parkway, Police Sgt. Tim Smith said.

Wendt and her son were taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where the baby died about four hours later.

Wendt suffered slight brain damage and a ruptured spleen and was in serious condition, authorities said.

Witnesses told police that Wendt had stopped at a signal and was accelerating forward on a green light.

The truck apparently had failed to stop at a red light, the witnesses told police.

The 46-year-old driver of the truck has not been cited pending the completion of the investigation, police said.

Detectives are asking anyone who has information about the accident to call (714) 724-7036.
