Newbury Park Cuts Royal to the Quick

Chris Czernek connected with Patrick Reddick on an 80-yard pass play on the first play from scrimmage and Newbury Park High rolled to a 27-7 victory over Royal in a Marmonte League game Friday night at Moorpark College.

Czernek, who last week set a Ventura County record with 426 yards passing, threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns, completing 16 of 28. Czernek has passed for an area-high 2,196 yards and 18 touchdowns this season.

Garrett Hobba rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns for Newbury Park (6-1, 3-1 in league play).

Following the first of two interceptions by Dustin Cruz, Royal (1-6 , 1-3) tied the score, 7-7, on a 23-yard scoring run by Ray Molina, who had 97 yards in 24 carries.

The Panthers regained the lead when Czernek hit Hobba with a seven-yard touchdown pass with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Hobba has scored 14 touchdowns this season.

Czernek also threw a touchdown pass to his brother, Nick Czernek, covering nine yards in the second quarter.

Reddick had three catches for 90 yards.

Royal’s Braden Fien completed 12 of 27 for 125 yards, and James Gnesda had five receptions for 37 yards.
