Santa Claritans were pumped up Saturday morning by a report that Bob Dole would make a stop at the Valencia Town Center Mall. . . . But by afternoon, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) was sending out bad news. . . . The presidential campaign dash would get no closer than Burbank Airport.

Archeologists are aflutter over Newhall Land & Farming Co.’s offer to donate the ruins of a Spanish settlement to the public. . . . But others call it cultural blackmail because the gift goes through only after approval of the proposed 25,000-home Newhall Ranch (B1).
