Mayor Vows to Fight Area Code Proposal

Mayor Walter K. Bowman is leading the City Council in a fight against a proposal to divide Cypress into two telephone area codes.

All of the city is now within the 714 area code. Bowman said that situation should continue.

In a letter to the state Public Utilities Commission, Bowman wrote: “The boundaries proposed would divide Cypress, with all phone numbers on the south side of Katella Avenue receiving the new area code. This would cause great confusion and inconvenience for the residents living in this area.”

Bowman’s letter urged the PUC to reject the proposed division of Cypress and instead to continue the 714 area code throughout the city.

A new telephone area code is being proposed for part of Orange County because of increased demand for phone numbers created by use of faxes and cellular phones.

The proposal to split Cypress would harm businesses in the city, Bowman said, adding that splitting the city along Katella Avenue would illogically divide the Cypress Business Park.

Dividing the city at Katella Avenue would cause those businesses “disruption in their operations,” Bowman said.
