Highland Rules Golden League

Andrea Neipp of Highland High set a course record and two of her teammates placed among the top five finishers in the Golden League cross-country finals Wednesday to help the Bulldogs clinch their first league title.

Neipp, third in the State Division I championships last year, clocked 18 minutes 19 seconds over the three-mile course at Rancho Vista Hills in Quartz Hill to break the course record of 19:06 she set last year.

Rachel Guerrero was third in 19:45 and Yvonne Sanchez finished fifth in 21:12, helping Highland win with 32 points. Defending champion Quartz Hill placed second with 45 points and Palmdale was third with 47.

Danielle Day placed second in 19:20 and Carly Harrill was fourth in 19:59 for Quartz Hill.

In the boys’ race, Jacob Geyer of Palmdale won with a time of 16:36 and the Falcons edged Littlerock, 41-47, but the Lobos won the overall title based on a team’s performance in four league meets.

Bryan Greene placed second in 16:45 for Littlerock, which won its first league title.

The top three teams in both races qualified for the Southern Section preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College on Nov. 16.

Camino Real League finals--Teresa Greening of St. Anthony won her third consecutive title at Griffith Park, but Bell-Jeff swept the next five places to win its fourth consecutive girls’ championship.

Greening clocked 20:18 over the three-mile course, with Bell-Jeff’s Rocio Serrano second in 20:45 and Karen Canani in third at 21:02.

Jennifer Jenkins (22:01), Lilly Robone (22:27) and Cindy Contero (22:38) of Bell-Jeff helped the Guards total 20 points. Pius X was second with 75.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UC San Diego 3, Cal Lutheran 0--Laren Johnson scored twice and Brandie Hayungs scored once as the Tritons (17-1) eliminated the Regals (17-3) from the NCAA Division III playoffs in an opening round match at San Diego.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Ventura 15, Cypress 4--Goalie Paulo Teixeira made 13 saves as the Pirates scored a first-round victory in the Southern California regional at Ventura College.

Ventura (19-10-3) made 14 steals and Rodrigo Fernandes had five goals. Paul Caldentey and Nure Saad each added three goals.

The Pirates play Golden West (33-1) in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Friday at Belmont Plaza. Golden West has beaten Ventura four times this season. Friday’s winners advance to the state tournament.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Nordhoff 12, Milken 5--Justin Jewell scored six goals and Cory Gustafson added three for Nordhoff in a Frontier League match.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Pasadena d. Hoover, 15-7, 15-12, 15-13--Bridget Pearson had seven kills but the Tornadoes (5-9, 3-7) dropped a Pacific League match at Pasadena.

Ramona Convent d. Montclair Prep, 15-5, 13-15, 16-14, 15-9--Karyn Dousette had 28 kills for the Mounties (6-8).
