In what promises to be one of the county’s splashiest fund-raising events, 10,000 yellow rubber ducks will be dropped into Queensway Bay in Long Beach on Sunday.

With the help of several local agencies, Goodwill Industries of Long Beach and South Bay is sponsoring the Greater Long Beach Rubber Duck Derby to raise money for school uniforms for needy middle school youths.

At 2:30 p.m., volunteers will unload 65 crates of tagged and numbered 4-inch ducks from Goodwill trucks. They will be released into the bay at the West Coast Long Beach Hotel where they will float to “duck traps.”

Norm Reed, Goodwill director of development, says 6,000 residents have taken out duck adoption papers--”lone ducks for five bucks, five quackers for 20 smackers, a flock of 30 racing thrills for 100 dollar bills.” Prizes include a two-year lease on a Toyota truck, a trip to New York, a $500 shopping spree and a big-screen TV.
