Reserve Paces Fullerton to Victory

Reserve quarterback Paul Waldrop came on in the second quarter and threw for three touchdowns to lead Fullerton to a 35-28 victory over Golden West Saturday night at Fullerton High.

Golden West (1-7, 1-4) was trailing in the fourth quarter, 35-21, and scored on Charles Chatman’s three-yard touchdown run with 2:06 remaining. On the ensuing kickoff, the Rustlers’ attempted onside kick was not successful. The Hornets recovered the ball and proceeded to run out the clock.

Rustler quarterback Brian Baughman completed 17 of 32 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Baughman’s first touchdown came in the first quarter on a 19-yard pass to Dan Palanca to make it, 7-0.

Fullerton (4-4, 3-2) tied the score in the second quarter, 7-7, when Waldrop connected with Ryan Schatz on a 29-yard pass. Chatman, who had 209 yards in 34 carries and one touchdown, scored on a 13-yard run to put Golden West ahead, 14-7. The Hornets scored on a 13-yard pass from Waldrop to Schatz to tie it, 14-14. Golden West went ahead, 21-14, on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Baughman to Palanca.

The Hornets blocked a Rustlers’ 34-yard field-goal attempt with 50 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The Hornets later scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Waldrop to Dave Guy.

In another Mission Conference game:

Long Beach 28, Orange Coast 14--Tyler Tomich passed for three touchdowns in the victory over host Orange Coast (1-8). Tomich completed 17 of 34 passes for 195 yards.

After Orange Coast took the early lead on a two-yard touchdown run by Chet Walker, Tomich tied the score with a five-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Timmons.

Long Beach (7-2) took a 21-7 lead at halftime after second-quarter touchdowns by Ahmad Jackson and Michael Green. Jackson scored on four-yard run with 5:06 left in the half. Green caught a 16-yard pass from Tomich.

The Pirates cut the lead to seven in the third quarter when Mike Knox caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Chad Collins with 4:49 left.

Collins completed 24 of 43 passes for 329 yards and became the first Orange Coast quarterback to throw for 300 yards in a game since Keith Jarrett set the school record in 1988 with 378 yards against Citrus.

Tomich gave Long Beach some breathing room with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Darnell Ned early in the fourth quarter.
