Major Home Fire Blamed on Child Who Took Lighter

A single-family home received major damage Tuesday after a 4-year-old boy started a fire with his mother’s cigarette lighter, according to Tabby Cato, an Anaheim fire spokeswoman.

The blaze broke out at 5:18 p.m. and raced through the dwelling at 814 S. Gilbuck Drive, fed by the wood-shingle roof, Cato said, adding that it caused about $90,000 damage to the house and $2,000 damage to a neighbor’s roof.

Forty-three firefighters extinguished the flames in 25 minutes. One firefighter suffered a leg burn, Cato said.

The 4-year-old apparently took his mother’s lighter when she wasn’t looking, went to the family garage and set some clothes on fire, Cato said.
