Oh, Zuzana! Stunova Repeats

Zuzana Stunova of Rio Mesa won her second consecutive Channel League singles championship with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over teammate Veronica Reynosa in Wednesday’s final at Pierpont Racquet Club in Ventura.

Stunova, defending Southern Section champion, needed less than an hour to win the first all-Rio Mesa singles final in the 31-year history of the school. Both players advance to the Southern Section tournament Nov. 23.

Marmonte League Tournament--Helena Horak of Westlake repeated as singles champion and twins Erin and Katy Smith, also of Westlake, did the same in doubles at North Ranch Country Club.

Horak, top-seeded, defeated second-seeded Jennifer Donahue of Agoura, 6-4, 6-0, in the final.

The seeded-second Smiths beat Angela Chen and Leila Jirari of Thousand Oaks, 6-0, 6-2.

Verdugo Hills 6, Westchester 1--Sonia Beduya, Emma De Los Reyes, and Richelle De Los Reyes won their singles matches and the Dons swept the doubles in the first round of the City Section 3-A Division playoffs at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY

Foothill Conference Finals--Antelope Valley captured its fourth Foothill Conference women’s cross-country championship in five years at San Bernardino Valley College.

Shannon Earle won the women’s race by covering the three-mile course in 20 minutes 53 seconds, beating Juanita Rodriguez of Citrus by 24 seconds.

Antelope Valley’s women finished with 32 points. Citrus was second at 33, followed by College of the Desert at 56.

In men’s final, Joey Montelongo of Antelope Valley finished ninth to qualify for the State Junior College Championships on Nov. 23 in Fresno.

COLLEGE SOCCER

Fresno State 3, Cal State Northridge 1--Forward Michael Preis had the Matadors’ only goal in their season finale. Northridge finished 4-10-2.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Pepperdine 9, UC Santa Barbara 6--Chris Tilden and Christian Jensen each scored three goals for the Waves (6-14) at Malibu.
