Authorities blamed an unattended stove for a two-alarm fire Thursday that gutted an apartment in Camarillo.

No one was injured, but one apartment was destroyed in the blaze, which began at 11:15 a.m. in the 200 block of South Glenn Drive, said Ventura County Fire Department spokesman O.J. Hunt.

Authorities said Marcus Rowe was at home with his infant daughter and two friends when the fire broke out. Rowe told friends that he was at the stove cooking and the next thing he knew the apartment was on fire.

Hunt later confirmed that the fire started on the stove. He said all three rooms of the two-story apartment were damaged. “It was a total loss inside,” Hunt said.

Damage to the one-bedroom unit was estimated at $35,000.

More than 30 Fire Department personnel were sent to the scene and the fire was contained at 11:41 a.m., Hunt said.

Fire crews remained on the scene until about 3 p.m. making sure there were no hot spots inside the apartment, and patching the roof, Hunt said.
