SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Sean Stein completed 18 of 24 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns to lead Los Alamitos to a 49-6 victory over Huntington Beach in a Sunset League game Thursday night at Veterans Stadium.

Stein threw touchdown passes of 10 yards to Blair Havens and four yards to Chris Millard and also scored on a two-yard keeper as the Griffins, in the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season, matched last season’s 9-1 regular-season record.

“This has been a very satisfying season,” Coach John Barnes said. “We felt we would be successful with a 7-3 or 6-4 record but to miss out on a perfect season by only four points was outstanding.”

The Griffins’ only setback was a 24-20 loss to Sunset League-leading Esperanza.

“The offense played excellent and the defense played one of its best games of the year,” Barnes said.

Huntington Beach (3-7, 1-4 in league) was limited to three first downs (one by penalty). The Los Alamitos defense recorded two safeties and Jason Wimbash returned a fumble 31 yards for a touchdown.

Los Alamitos took a 24-0 halftime lead. Dave Bacani returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and Mike Phillips made a 27-yard field goal to go with Stein’s two touchdown passes.

Jim Frantz scored the final Griffin touchdown on a one-yard run.

Dennis Masuda provided the scoring for the Oilers with a 95-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter.

Havens was Stein’s chief target, catching eight passes for 118 yards.

The Los Alamitos defense, which recovered three fumbles and had an interception, held the Oilers to 57 yards in total offense.
