Cicero Shines; Servite Routs Westminster

Servite finished its undefeated Golden West League season by defeating Westminster, 63-21, Friday night at Cal State Fullerton.

Quarterback Greg Cicero completed 10 of 12 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns all in the first half for Servite (9-1, 5-0). “[Cicero’s] got good receivers,” Servite Coach Larry Toner said. “I was very happy with our offense.”

Receiver Steve Ward, Cicero’s main target, caught five passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

Servite also moved the ball well on the ground, gaining 355 yards. Danny Rubalcava did most of the damage rushing for 106 yards in eight carries in the first half.

With a 42-0 lead at halftime, Toner pulled his first string. But even the Friars’ second-stringers were too much for the Lions.

Alan Sabio picked up where Rubalcava left off, rushing for 97 yards in five carries including touchdown runs of two and 77 yards.

Westminster (3-7, 2-3) scored its first points midway through the third quarter on a 40 yard touchdown run by Sparky Kale (111 yards in 13 carries).

Trailing 63-6, the Lions scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The first came on a 14-yard pass from Shaun Spradlin to Erick Arthur with 3:13 left to play.

After a fumble recovery by James Holmes, Spradlin threw for another touchdown, this time to Chris Brewer for 20 yards. Brewer caught five passes for 110 yards. Spradlin completed nine of 18 passes for 148 yards.
