Golden West Advances to Water Polo Final Again

Golden West, which had lost to Long Beach in its last two meetings, beat the Vikings, 9-5, in one semifinal of the state men’s water polo tournament Friday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Golden West (32-2) had beaten Diablo Valley, 18-7, earlier Friday and advances to the championship game tonight seeking its eighth consecutive state title.

Golden West meets Grossmont at 8:20 p.m. for the championship. Grossmont beat West Valley, 9-3, and then Citrus, 12-10, in double overtime to advance.

Andre Araujo scored two goals in the victory over Long Beach, which had beaten Golden West in the South Coast Conference and the Southern California tournaments.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Rancho Santiago 53, College of the Canyons 52--Mark Saukkola made both free throws after a technical foul with three seconds left for visiting Rancho Santiago. The technical foul was called when Canyons called a timeout despite having none left.

In other nonconference games:

Long Beach City 84, Golden West 72--Terrell McKnight had 28 points and 17 rebounds to lift Long Beach City (1-0) over Golden West (0-1) after trailing at the half, 46-40. Ray Jimmerson led the Rustlers with 17 points.

In the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament:

Saddleback 77, Los Angeles Valley 72--Brian Scoggin scored 22 points in a first-round victory for Saddleback (1-0). Teammate Sean Morris scored 16 points.

In the Chaffey women’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast 82, Foothill 62--Dianne Pulido scored 36 points and had 14 rebounds for Orange Coast.

In the Santa Barbara women’s basketball tournament:

Irvine Valley 96, Southwestern 46--Heather Cunningham, a 6-foot-1 forward out of El Dorado High School, had 18 points and eight rebounds as Irvine Valley (1-0) advances to final.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Rancho Santiago 62, Mt. San Jacinto 37--Chanel Neal scored 17 points and Tanya Whitlock added 16 as Rancho Santiago (1-0) wins their season opener.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Orange Coast 0--Lorna Lyttle had 11 kills in a victory for Golden West (18-1, 9-1). Amber Ambrose and Jennifer Fish each had five kills for Orange Coast (10-8, 5-6).
