SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The question before the game was whether Cal Lutheran could end the football season on a high note.

Afterward, the only question was, how high?

Records fell and spirits rose after the Kingsmen defeated Menlo College, 59-41, on Saturday at Mt. Clef Stadium.

“It was a score-a-thon there,” senior quarterback Ryan Huisenga said. “Nobody was stopping anybody, but I had a great time.

“It was the last game I’ll ever play, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

Huisenga, a three-year starter for the Kingsmen, passed for four touchdowns and ran for another one as Cal Lutheran rebounded from discouraging losses in its two previous games. He completed 17 of 24 passes for 224 yards with the four touchdowns and no interceptions.

“I’m just so pleased with the way the guys responded,” Cal Lutheran Coach Scott Squires said. “After our last two games, we very easily could have just folded. But that didn’t happen.”

Six players scored touchdowns for Cal Lutheran (4-5), which combined with Menlo (5-4) to set a school record for points in a game. The 100-point total surpassed the previous mark of 92 when La Verne beat the Kingsmen, 55-37, in 1992.

The 59 points by the Kingsmen are the most they have scored since another 59-point game in 1980. The school record for points in a game is 60 set in 1969.

“I just thank God this happened in my last game,” Huisenga said. “It was a great way to end it.”

Fredrik Nanhed rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns, the last one giving Cal Lutheran a 59-27 lead with 7:32 to play. Billy Busch had four carries for 62 yards and scored a touchdowns.

Dwight McNaughton made six catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns, and seven Kingsmen caught passes.

Cal Lutheran got plenty of help from the defense.

The Kingsmen made four interceptions and recovered a pair of fumbles, and scored after five of the six turnovers.

Strong safety Mattias Wikstrom had 15 tackles, including nine solos, and an interception.

Linebacker Steve Schmidt also intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble to go with four tackles.
