Quake Insurance Agency the Topic

The state’s new earthquake insurance agency will be discussed Wednesday at a meeting of the Sylmar Community Coordinating Council.

Keith E. Weaver, field representative for state Sen. Herschel Rosenthal (D-Van Nuys), will discuss the California Earthquake Authority, which was established in September to set insurance rates, said Irma Goodman, a council spokeswoman.

“This is an important meeting because no one really understands what the California Earthquake Authority is doing with the rate changes,” said Goodman.

Weaver said Rosenthal, who is chairman of the Senate Insurance Committee, has received numerous calls since the Earthquake Authority presented its new structure last month.

“What we are trying to do is to take a complex situation and bring it to a layman’s perspective,” said Weaver. “We’re going to try to answer some of the practical questions like what is this agency and why do we need it?” he said.

The council invites the public to attend its monthly meetings, which serve as a forum for community improvement in Sylmar.

The meeting will be held at noon at Mandarin King restaurant, 17092 Devonshire St., Northridge. A buffet lunch is available for $6.50.
